Philodendrons are some of the easiest houseplants to care for. They’re very forgiving and a great choice if you’re newer to plants, but they’ll still thrive with proper care.
💧 Watering
Philodendrons prefer to dry out well between waterings.
• Avoid watering on a schedule.
• Go by the weight of the pot.
👉 The sweet spot:
Water when the pot feels very light, indicating it is about 75% dried out.
Watering too soon can lead to edema and other moisture-related issues.
🌞 Light
• Bright, indirect light is best.
• Can tolerate medium light.
• Avoid harsh direct sun (can burn leaves).
More light = faster growth and better color.
🌱 Soil
• Well-draining soil is key.
• A chunky mix is ideal.
They don’t like sitting in soggy soil.
🌿 Fertilizer
• Can be fertilized on a schedule every 2–4 weeks.
• Or use a light fertilizer with every watering.
Consistent nutrients will encourage faster growth and healthier leaves.
🌡️ Humidity & Temperature
• Do well in normal household humidity.
• Appreciate higher humidity but don’t require it.
• Keep away from cold drafts.
🌿 Growth Habit
• Many philodendrons are vining or climbing plants.
• Will grow larger leaves if given support (moss pole, stake, etc.).
⚠️ Common Issues
Yellowing Leaves
• Usually overwatering.
Edema (Brown Spots or Bumps)
• Watering too frequently.
Leggy Growth
• Not enough light.
Small Leaves
• Needs more light or nutrients.

Pick up your plant regularly. Learning the weight difference between wet and dry soil is the easiest way to get watering right.
