Monsteras are one of the most popular houseplants for a reason. They’re adaptable and relatively easy, but proper care makes a huge difference in leaf size and fenestration (those iconic splits).
💧 Watering
Monsteras prefer to dry out well between waterings.
• Do not keep soil constantly wet.
👉 The sweet spot:
Allow the soil to dry out 75–100%, then water thoroughly.
Letting them dry out properly helps prevent root rot and encourages strong root growth.
🌞 Light
• Bright, indirect light is ideal.
• Can tolerate medium light.
• Avoid harsh direct sun.
More light = bigger leaves and more fenestrations.
🌱 Soil
• Well-draining, chunky soil is best.
• Needs airflow around the roots.
Avoid dense soil that holds too much moisture.
🌿 Fertilizer
• Can be fertilized on a schedule every 2–4 weeks.
• Or use a light fertilizer with every watering.
Regular feeding encourages faster growth and larger leaves.
🌡️ Humidity & Temperature
• Do well in normal household humidity.
• Thrive in warmer environments.
• Keep away from cold drafts.
🌿 Growth Habit
• Natural climber.
• Will produce larger, more mature leaves when given support such as a moss pole or stake.
Without support, leaves may stay smaller and less fenestrated.
✂️ Maintenance
• Rotate regularly for even growth.
• Wipe leaves to keep them clean and help with light absorption.
* Do not repot until they are firmly rootbound, Monsteras prefer to be rootbound and will focus on their roots and not their leaves if you put them in too big of a pot.
⚠️ Common Issues
Yellowing Leaves
Usually caused by overwatering.
No Fenestrations
The plant may need more light or additional support.
Small Leaves
Usually caused by insufficient light or nutrients.
💡 Pro Tip
Don’t be afraid to let your Monstera dry out. They handle dryness much better than being overwatered.
